The Suffering Servant – The Crucified Messiah

The Messiah as a “Suffering Servant” – as, even worse, a “Crucified Messiah” – certainly seems like an oxymoron. After Jesus’ death, two disciples, journeying to Emmaus, explain to their unknown companion (the Risen Jesus ) that “Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (Luke 24:19-24). “We had hoped…” Clearly, they had expected something completely different: a powerful, military Messiah who would crush the Romans and usher in the Messianic Age of prosperity, justice and peace. The Risen Jesus – by the very fact that he has conquered death – reveals himself to them as living proof that being crucified and being the Messiah are not an oxymoron, and never were such. Jesus is the Suffering Servant, the Messiah, the Anointed One, who is crucified to death, rises in victory over death as the Messiah who will redeem and transform all of creation.
